From case cover:
"Louis Malle based this semi-autobiographical film on a tragic childhood memory. The tale of two schoolboys is set in the cruel winter of 1944 in occupied France, where Jews must hide to stay alive. 12-year-old Julien doesn't understand why new boy Jean Bonnet-real name, he later learns is Kippelstein- is bullied by other students and protected by the teachers. But that cruelty and those differences are small compared to the truths ahead, when the school is confronted by an undesirable visit from the Gestapo."
