John Turturro and Emily Watson star in this engrossing story of love and obsession. Based on the novel by Vladimir Nabokov, the film examines the life of Alexander Luzhin (Turturro), an eccentric chess master whose unstable childhood has made him incapable of relating to others. The game of chess is his only escape and his only solace, until he meets and falls in love with the caring Natalia (Watson) at the Italian resort where he's the favorite in the most prestigious chess championship in the country.
