LOC classification:

Summary: From DVD cover: One of the world's most influential and provacative filmmakers, the Oscar-winning Austrian director Michael Haneke diagnoses the social maladies of contemporary Europe with devastating precision and artistry. His drama "Code Unknown," the first of his many films made in France, may be his most inspired work. Composed almost entirely of brilliantly shot, single-take vignettes focusing on characters connected to one seemingly minor incident on a Paris street, Haneke's film - with an outstanding international cast headlined by Juliette Binoche - is a revelatory examination of racial inequality and the failure of communication in an increasingly diverse modern landscape. From IMDb: A young man harasses a homeless woman, another man protests, the police arrest both and the woman has to leave the country. What were their various story-lines leading up to this event? Additional summary: A busy street in downtown Paris, a single act causes disparate existences to collide. An actress, named Anne, her boyfriend Georges and his brother Jean cross paths with a Romanian beggar woman, Maria and Amadou a music teacher for deaf-mute children. Each possesses a a reality that is different from the others and yet they are all responsible for one another. When communication proves dangerous and the distance between people is unbridgeable, can human connections ever be forged? Michael Haneke was born in 1942. He studied philosophy, psychology and theatre in Vienna. From 1967 to 1970 he worked for German television. Since 1970, he has been woring as an independent director and screen writer.
