From case cover:
A couple with a terrorist past have been living on the run for 20 years and have a 15 year old daughter, Jeanne, who has never known a normal childhood. When their money is stolen, they are forced to return secretly from Portugal to their native Germany, undertaking a journey during which Jeanne's teenage development coincides with the disintegration of the family cell.
Christian Petzold, one of the leading lights of the new "Berlin School" movement of young German filmmakers, has written and directed a film that delves into the psychology of the former terrorists and looks at what has become of the radical Left after the hiatus of the materialist 80s. Amongst its many festival and critical plaudits, "The State I Am In" was included at Cannes as the FIPRESCI "Discovery of the Year".
