Fully restored in HD -- An epic in the tradition of Doctor Zhivago and Ryan's Daughter -- still considered by most as greatest film adaptaion of VIctor Hugo's masterpiece, Les Miserables. Jéan Valjean (Jean Gabin) is released on parole after serving 19 years in a hard labor prison for stealing some bread. Valjean is set straight by a kindly bishop (Fernand Ledoux) who gives him a set of very expensive candlesticks and makes him promise to turn his life around from that day forward. Nine years later, Valjean, now a wealthy industrialist and mayor, risks everything when he comes to aid of Fantine (Daniele Delorme), a single mosther turned prostitiute. Fantine is nearly arrested by a police officer, Javert (Bernard Blier), who was as a guard at the prison where Valjean served time. The cop begins to suspect that the mayor and Valjean, the good samaritan, are the same person. The all-star cast includes legendary character actors Bourvil and Serge Reggiani. Directed by Jean-Louis Le Chabois.
