Bu even before he arrives, his powerful neighbor, Cesar Soubeyran (portrayed by the legendary Yves Montand in the greatest role of his career). is plotting to steal his land. The wily Cesar knows of a hidden spring on the property. Working with his sneaky nephew, Ugolin, the greedy old man intends to use the water to grow a lucrative field of carnations.
When Cesar's wicked scheme - and a severe drought - bring Jean to the brink of destruction, the courageous farmer makes one last attempt to find water on his land. But his noble efforts lead only to heartbreaking tragedy.
