N2 - From Case Cover: The renowned Russian basso Feodor Chaliapin (1873-1938), regarded as one of the greatest singing actors of his day, left an invaluable record of his art in the film Don Quixote (1933). His association with Cervantes' mad hero extends at least as far back as 1910, when he assumed the title role in Massenet's opera Don Quichotte, a part created especially for Chaliapin. His expressive face alone would have made him the quintessential Knight of the Mournful Countenance. Having portrayed Ivan the Terrible in 1915 for an unsuccessful silent film, Chaliapin avoided screen roles until the sound era allowed him to record not only with his gestures, but also his voice in Don Quixote. The film was shot in English and French versions, both of which are included in this DVD release. (A German-language version was also filmed.) Through primarily an actor in this film, Chaliapin is afforded ample opportunity to sing. The musical score consists of four songs by Jacques Ibert and one by Alexander Dargomyzhsky. This precious document preserves the arresting demeanor, the vocal riches, and the dramatic power of an operatic legend ER -
