[Cohen Film Collection]
After the death of her mother, Tristana (Catherine Deneuve) goes to live with her guardian, Don Lope (Fernando Rey), an older man who eventually breaks through his facade of respectability and seduces her. She repays him a hundred fold, preying on his jealousy and taunting him with perverse whimsies.
Cohen Film Collection is proud to present this newly restored and re-mastered edition of the Oscar-nominated classic from Luis Buñuel which includes a 20-page collectible booklet and never-before-seen bonus features.
[Buñuel: The Essential Collection]
A surreal criticism of Catholicism and the modern world, the Academy Award nominated Tristana offered conclusive proof that Buñuel had lost none of his bite. Set in Toledo in the early 1930's Fernando Rey stars as Don Lope, an aging figure of respectability who becomes the guardian of Tristana (Catherine Deneuve), a young woman with whom he is soon completely smitten. Finally accepting Don Lope's proposal of marriage after having her tumorous leg amputated, Tristana chooses a passionless union rather than be a subject to the harsh realties of a society that refuses to change to the needs of women. Essentially a contest of wills between the two lead characters (with Deneuve and Rey both giving excellent performances), Tristana is a compelling black comedy that offers a characteristically audacious look at sexual obsession and bourgeois sensibilities.
From IMDb:
When the young woman Tristana's mother dies, she is entrusted to the guardianship of the well-respected though old Don Lope. Don Lope is well-liked and well-known because of his honorable nature, despite his socialistic views about business and religion. But Don Lope's one weakness is women, and he falls for the innocent girl in his charge, seduces her, makes her his lover, though all the while explaining to her that she is as free as he. But when she acts on this freedom, Don Lope must deal with the consequences of his world-view.
