Russian director Mikhail Romm attempts to show Fascism's inhumane face via historical films and pictures taken during the Nazi era and to reveal the mechanisms by which millions of people were defrauded. The film analyzes the roots of Fascism and its disastrous impact on the human psyche. His personal commentary throughout the film provides an understanding of the phenomenon not previously gleaned from the original viewing of the material. Ironically, much of his commentary could just as easily have been used for another, very similar phenomenon: the cult of Stalinism, which swept the USSR at the very same time -- and previous to -- the events shown here were being filmed. Nevertheless, all irony and righteous disgust aside, the commentary fits the subject matter and stresses, point by point and event by event, why the world doesn't need Fascism, even if it's alive and well in many countries today and most likely will be in the future in spite of reasonable interpretations of the plague as presented in this film. An excellent primer film about the Third Reich and its "culture". | ||
