520 _aFrom case cover: Set in southeastern Iran amongst the nomadic tribes who weave "gabbeh" carpets - a distinctive Persian rug that features patterns inspired by their lives, their landscape and the loves they experience - Gabbeh is a part-fictional and part-documentary film about a magical romance and how life inspires art. The love story centres around a young woman, named Gabbeh, who is forbidden by her father to marry the man she loves. The lover, always elusive yet ever present, beckons to Gabbeh from his horse as she and her tribe cross rivers and snowbound mountains. Through this richly metaphoric tale, Makhmalbaf raises questions about the position of women in traditional (and in this case, Islamic) societies and the struggle between love and freedom for these nomadic people. Gabbeh also explores the inspiration behind the wonderful colours and intricate patterns that make a persian rug.
