The tale of two schoolboys is set in the cruel winter of 1944 in occupied France, where Jews must hide to stay alive. 12-year-old Julien doesn't understand why new boy Jean Bonnet-real name, he later learns is Kippelstein- is bullied by other students and protected by the teachers.
